The businessman says he takes doxing seriously. Many people consider his rampant account blocking to be self-serving. On Twitter, Elon Musk is a threat to everyone.

Elon Musk’s dedication to virtually limitless free expression has crumbled. When he first began his takeover attempt earlier this year, the businessman argued that Twitter should permit all legitimate expression. He signaled a change in his stance this month by blocking a tweet from the rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, that contained a swastika.

He stepped up his efforts this week and deleted more than 25 Twitter accounts, including his own private jet, that were broadcasting information on commercial flights. A number of journalists who had written about the crackdown the day before were also suspend from Twitter.

Twitter appears to be moderated less according to set rules and more according to what its owner wants at any given time. Musk says he protects people from being dox, but last week he arbitrarily suspended accounts for expressing his ire rather than for using illegitimate speech.

This innovative approach will permanently alter Twitter. Journalists have helped the platform remain relevant despite being smaller than competitors like Facebook by providing it with vetted, free content when rumors and conjecture are rampant and news is breaking.

Musk’s Twitter attack on well-known journalists serves as an example of how the regulation may be enforce inconsistently.

Musk changed his mind this week after alleging that a “crazy stalker” followed the car carrying his small son. There are still unanswere concerns surrounding the incident, and it’s not obvious how an automotive tragedy might be related to a Twitter account that posted publicly available airplane location data. But that was enough for Musk to firmly disagree with revealing someone else’s present or prior whereabouts.

Posts containing what the website refers to as “private information” are now subject to the Twitter policy, as it has just been update. According to the statement, individuals can still share their own data but not others’ “real-time” or “same-day” locations. The sharing of personal photos and videos on Twitter is also prohibite.

There are exceptions for “issues or occurrences of public interest” and “newsworthy incidents.” Inquiries regarding the implementation of this rule received no response from Twitter.

But it’s obvious that Musk favors journalists because he suspended reporters for sharing information that he didn’t want a huge audience to see. In a statement, CNN described the journalist suspensions as “concerning but not surprising” and said that in light of a response to its inquiries into the suspensions, it will reassess its relationship with Twitter. Musk has the power to bar anybody from accessing the site, including journalists, but the American Civil Liberties Union called the bans “an attack on free expression.”
