According to reports, Google is developing a method for transforming physical SIM cards into electronic SIMs. Additionally, this would make it simple for consumers to switch their current eSIM from one device to another.
The Android 13 QPR2 Beta 2 release from Google has just started to go out, giving Pixel enthusiasts a sneak peek at all the upgrades that might be included in the March Feature Drop. Along with 31 new emojis and a feature, this most recent version also includes code that highlights significant quality-of-life improvements for Android’s eSIM experience.
Mishaal Rahman, a tipster, said in a series of tweets that Android 13 QPR2 Beta 2 adds a new system feature named “euicc.seamless transfer enabled in non qs.”
This is a hint to a future feature that would probably allow consumers to move an eSIM profile from an old Android phone to a new phone. Additionally, users might be able to change a physical SIM card from an outdated phone into an eSIM profile from a more recent model.
The transfer of an eSIM profile from one phone to another is currently not possible with Android. The consumers must deactivate the eSIM profile on their old phone and activate it on the new one in order to do this. Users may need to approach the carrier because the procedure is tough.
The tweets further suggest that moving an eSIM across devices is not a standard function of the eSIM settings. In other words, Google might not be able to make this functionality available to all Android smartphones through the usage of AOSP and would have to first restrict it to Pixel phones.
Moving from one Pixel to another or factory resetting the same device may be the only ways to transfer eSIMs. Carrier-dependent conversion of physical SIM profiles to eSIM is likely.
