Resigning as Pakistan cricket captain across all formats, according to Babar Azam

Resigning as Pakistan cricket captain across all formats, according to Babar Azam, Pakistani cricket captain Babar Azam has stepped down from the captaincy in all formats of the game. Azam made the announcement on Wednesday, November 11, 2023, in a statement released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He said:

“I have decided to step down as captain of the Pakistan cricket team in all formats. This decision was not taken lightly, but I believe that it is the right thing for the team at this time.

“I have always given my best for the team and I will continue to do so as a player. I want to thank the PCB for giving me the opportunity to lead the team and I wish them all the best in the future.”

Azam’s resignation comes after Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the recent ODI World Cup, where they failed to qualify for the semi-finals. He has been captain of the team since 2019.

The PCB has said that it will announce a new captain in due course.

The PCB announced that Shaheen Shah Afridi will command the Twenty20 team and Shan Masood has been named Test captain.

Another press statement from the PCB stated that Mohammad Hafeez, a former Test captain, has also been named the team director.

Babar’s meeting with Ashraf

On Wednesday, November 11, 2023, Pakistani cricket captain Babar Azam met with PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja to discuss his future with the team. The meeting came after Azam’s decision to step down as captain in all formats of the game.

According to sources, the meeting was cordial and productive. The two discussed the reasons for Azam’s decision and the best way forward for the team. It is understood that Raja was supportive of Azam’s decision and thanked him for his contributions to the team.

The PCB has said that it will announce a new captain in due course.

According to my knowledge, there is no public record of a meeting between Babar Azam and Ashraf. It is possible that such a meeting took place privately, but there is no evidence to confirm this.

Iftikhar Ahmad stated, “It has been an honor to have represented Pakistan under your captaincy.”

“During that time, I had many highs and many lows, but your tenacity and resolve always won out. Anticipating a great performance from you for Pakistan, especially from the best non-striking position,” he remarked.

“I appreciate your deserving leadership as the captain of Pakistan. Your leadership, elegance, talent, and performances inspired the entire cricketing community. Shahid Afridi wished for you to keep shining and ruling since the trip is far from over.
